New LKA in Barleben: Construction will not begin until the end of 2025 at the earliest!

The construction of the new State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Saxony-Anhalt could begin earlier than originally planned. According to current information, construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the third quarter of 2025, while construction was previously scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026. Structural completion of the new building is targeted for the end of 2028.

Binding building rights already exist and the purchase of the property by the state-owned real estate and project management company (IPS) has been completed. With a cost of several hundred million euros, the new construction costs represent a significant investment. The new LKA building will be built on a seven-hectare site in Barleben, in the Börde district.

Planned equipment and capacities

The planned LKA building will offer a total of 20,000 square meters of office and 3,500 square meters of laboratory space. Around 700 employees will be housed there in the future. The LKA employees are currently housed at several locations in Magdeburg and in Schönebeck (Salzlandkreis), which underlines the need for a central new building.

Further large construction projects in Saxony-Anhalt

In addition to the new LKA building, there are several other important construction projects in Saxony-Anhalt. For example, the state is planning to build a new prison in Halle to replace old facilities and implement the mandatory single cell occupancy. The location for the new prison is Halle-Tornau on the A14, but the final city council greenlight for the project is still pending. This item was removed from the December City Council meeting.

In addition, renovation work is currently underway in the castle, where facade work and interior work will take place in the east wing. In the west wing, the renovation of the castle kitchen and the courtyard room are planned. The outer bailey will receive a modernization of the fire protection, electrical and building technology. The Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt has budgeted a total of nine million euros for this renovation work, although resistance to the plans was expressed.

Overall, it can be seen that Saxony-Anhalt is planning extensive investments in infrastructure in order to maintain and modernize not only the security infrastructure, but also historical buildings.
