Eviction judgment against Manne: He has three months left

84-year-old Manfred Moslehner, also known as Manne, was due to leave his long-time home in the Steinberg settlement in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The house in which he had lived since birth was rented by his parents and later taken over by him. His friends from the settlement are like family to him as they are the only ones he has left.

The tenants of the settlement are fighting against Am Steinberg development company mbH, which acquired the old terraced houses 14 years ago. The company has announced major upgrades that tenants say would make rents unaffordable. Some houses that have already been renovated charge rents of over 4,000 euros, which is unaffordable for the mostly older residents, many of them pensioners.

Manfred Moslehner is the first remaining tenant to be sued for refusing to allow the modernizations. The judge handed down the verdict that he must vacate his house within three months. However, Moslehner could stay in the house for the time being with a security deposit of 4,279 euros if he decides to do so.

Despite the eviction ruling, the tenants and their supporters are not giving up. They are demanding clarification about the development company's machinations and are considering whether they should appeal. The situation leaves its mark on Manne, who appears confused and exhausted after a decade of psychological terror.
