Remmo Clan: Berlin real estate trial over stolen gold coin
The Berlin regional court is currently conducting negotiations over five properties that are to be confiscated from the Remmo clan. The suspicion is that these houses were purchased with criminal proceeds. The Remmo clan, of Arab origin and around 1,000 members strong, also includes serious criminals. The most famous crimes include the theft of the giant gold coin from the Bode Museum in Berlin and the break-in into the Green Vault in Dresden. In 2018 alone, 77 of the clan's properties worth nine million euros were confiscated.
The current process concerns a so-called independent confiscation procedure, which involves the confiscation of apartments and properties in various Berlin districts. The main person affected, Karim R. from Tempelhof, is suspected by the public prosecutor of having acquired real estate between 2013 and 2019 with money that came from commercial theft, fraud or other crimes. Despite the discontinued money laundering criminal proceedings, the public prosecutor's office is convinced that the origin of these funds is questionable.
Karim R. denies any involvement in criminal offenses and emphasizes that his fortune largely comes from inheritances from his family in Lebanon. He has never received any money from criminal activities and only has a previous conviction for a traffic offense. The defense argues that R. was simply investing old family assets and was not being treated like an ordinary citizen. The court's decision is expected on October 7th, after a trial period of probably 25 days.
