Shock for Salzburg: traditional chocolate company facing ruin!
Salzburg Chocolate, a traditional company from Grödig, filed for bankruptcy proceedings at the Salzburg Regional Court today, May 28, 2025. The sale of the plant is imminent and marks another low point in the company's eventful history. After a bankruptcy at the end of 2021 and a subsequent restructuring plan that included a 100% repayment to creditors in February 2022, it initially seemed as if the company could recover. The first partial quota of 20% was paid out on time, but hopes of full payment of the debt now appear to be dwindling.
The restructuring plan called for the remaining 80% of the debt to be paid off by February 2025, secured by company properties. However, reports showed that the value of these properties is around 9.9 million euros, which is well below the original assumptions. Ultimately, it will no longer be possible to pay out the second restructuring plan quota, which will make the imminent sale of the properties necessary.
Financial situation and employees
The company's debts amount to around 7.7 million euros, while the exact status after the property has been sold remains unclear. Around 300 creditors have the opportunity to register their claims with the Credit Protection Association KSV1870. Until the end of December 2024, 58 employees were still employed, but the last employment contracts were terminated at the end of April 2025. This happened during the closure of the factory, which the employees protested against. The union also criticized the lack of a social plan for 65 employees.
The last “Real Salzburger Mozartkugel” was produced by “Mirabell” on December 6, 2024 – a sad end to an iconic sweet tradition. The closure of the Grödig factory not only affected the employees, but also the regional economy. It remains to be seen how the situation surrounding the properties and the upcoming auctions will develop.
