Tradition in retreat: Modehaus Ortner closes in Dortmund after 161 years!

The traditional Ortner fashion store in Dortmund will close on December 31, 2025. The family business has a long history since it was founded in 1864 and has been based at Hansaplatz since 2002. Ortner operates three branches: “Ortner”, “1864 Ortner” and “Juvia by Ortner”, in addition to an online shop. The closure is announced despite a good economic situation, which directly affects the company's 40 employees.

The reason for the closure is the non-renewal of the rental agreement with Dortmunder Dreier Immobilien AG (DIAG). A new location could not be found. After 161 years in downtown Dortmund, the Hansa Carré will in future be used by the Technical University of Dortmund (TU Dortmund). It has already signed a long-term rental agreement with DIAG until 2049.

New living space for students

The TU Dortmund plans to open new learning rooms, seminar rooms and event rooms in the Hansa Carré in autumn 2026. These new rooms should be accessible to the approximately 30,000 students as well as to the city community. Mayor Thomas Westphal sees this development as an opportunity to revitalize the city center and improve what it offers for students.

The closure of the Ortner fashion store not only represents a loss for Dortmund's shopping landscape, but also affects the structure of the city center. While Ortner is closing its premises, other tenants in the Hansa Carré, such as restaurants, are not affected to the same extent by this development.

Azad, the person responsible at Ortner, is currently looking for a new tenant for the vacant space. The conversion of the Hansa Carré into an educational space not only symbolizes the change in the use of retail space, but also a major step towards creating better learning spaces in the heart of the city.

The announcement shows how fast-moving the retail landscape is and highlights the challenges incumbents face. The Ortner fashion house's decision raises questions about the future of retail in Dortmund and the city's ability to adapt to the changing needs of its citizens.
