Uwe Conradt: Saarbrücken's new vice president of the German Association of Cities!
Uwe Conradt, the mayor of Saarbrücken, recently took over the position of vice president of the German Association of Cities. This election took place on May 14, 2023 in Hanover. The German Association of Cities, which represents the interests of around 3,200 cities and municipalities with around 53 million inhabitants in Germany, plays a central role in the country's political landscape. Conradt not only enjoys the trust of his colleagues, but is also well connected in the German Association of Cities, which he describes as his “playing field”.
In his new role, Conradt emphasized the challenges that cities have to overcome today. The focus is particularly on topics such as public services, mobility and integration. He is convinced that it is important to bring the perspectives of Saarbrücken's citizens into the national discourse. This includes aspects such as healthcare, social infrastructure and municipal finances.
Commitment to the automotive location
In addition to his new role as vice president, Conradt is also deputy state chairman of the CDU in Saarland and district chairman in Saarbrücken. He initiated the “Mayor for a Strong Automotive Location” campaign, in which 28 cities are now taking part. This commitment shows how important it is to him to maintain contacts with political representatives and interest groups in order to have a strong voice for his city and region.
During his time as mayor, which he has held since 2019, Conradt also served on the executive board of the German Association of Cities, of which he has been a member since 2020. He has been deputy to the president since 2021. His aspirations promise a strong involvement in shaping urban affairs at the national level. In his new role, he will play a key role in representing the cities' concerns.
Together we are the city
Around 1,500 delegates as well as guests from politics, administration and civil society are expected at the general meeting of the German Association of Cities, which will take place in Hanover from May 13th to 15th, 2025 under the motto “Together we are a city”. In this context, Katja Dörner, Mayor of Bonn, will be elected as Vice President, while Burkhard Jung, who was President from June 2019 to November 2021, has taken on this position again.
Uwe Conradt sees his election as Vice President as a great honor and an opportunity to meet the cities' challenges together. With his commitment, he hopes to make Saarbrücken more visible in local politics in Germany and to play an active role in overcoming the challenges facing the cities.
