The number of forced evictions in Frankfurt has risen sharply
In Frankfurt, the number of evictions rose significantly last year. According to planning department head Marcus Gwechenberger, a total of 664 evictions were scheduled, of which 404 were ultimately carried out. The municipal housing company ABG Holding commissioned 165 evictions, of which 82 were carried out. In comparison, there were 298 evictions of private landlords in 2023, with 209 actually taking place.
The Left faction criticized the approach, particularly by the ABG, which is responsible for a large part of the forced evictions in Frankfurt. Eyup Yilmaz, housing policy spokesman for the Left parliamentary group, described forced evictions as a threat to existence and emphasized that they had become commonplace in the city despite the corona pandemic and economic crises. The number of unreported cases could even be higher, as the official figures only reflect part of the reality.
The left-wing faction is calling for an immediate end to the forced evictions and is pushing for the city government to provide every citizen with adequate housing. The current figures make it clear that the situation in Frankfurt is worrying and measures must be taken to support those affected.
