Forced evictions in Frankfurt: Criticism of ABG Holding

In Frankfurt the number of evictions increased significantly last year. According to planning department head Marcus Gwechenberger, a total of 664 evictions were scheduled, of which 404 were ultimately carried out. Of these, 165 evictions were carried out on behalf of the municipal housing company ABG Holding. Compared to the previous year 2023, in which 209 evictions were carried out by private landlords, there is a significant increase.

The figures requested by the left-wing faction in Römer make it clear that evictions in Frankfurt are back at the 2020 level. There was a decline in 2022, but the number has now increased again. In 2020, 672 evictions were announced, of which 414 were carried out. The ABG contributed to 80 of these evictions. The left-wing faction, especially the housing policy spokesman Eyup Yilmaz, criticizes the approach and describes forced evictions as a threat to the existence of the people.

Yilmaz emphasized that despite the challenges posed by the corona pandemic and the economic crises, awareness of the problem remained unchanged. The left-wing faction is vehemently calling for forced evictions to be stopped and for everyone to be given adequate housing. It is noted that the number of unreported cases of those affected could be higher, as the published figures only include the cases recorded by the social affairs department. In view of this development, the city government in Frankfurt is faced with the challenge of finding appropriate solutions to reduce forced evictions and offer those affected a perspective.
