Agricultural industry is booming: New standards and investments for the future!

Remarkable progress has been made in Vietnam's agricultural sector in recent years. Particularly between 2021 and 2025, the sector will focus on the development of agricultural value chains, which will result in a stronger link between production and marketing. Vietnam.vn reports that the production of seedlings and ornamental plants has been boosted in close collaboration with cooperatives. There are currently 89 cooperative groups (THT) and 82 cooperatives (HTX) active, working with 4 affiliated groups on the value chain for essential agricultural products.

Among the most important products are coconuts, grapefruits, rambutans, longans, durians, mangoes, shrimps and livestock such as pigs and cows. The new strategy aims to shift agriculture from small-scale production to horizontal and vertical linkage so that efficiency and profitability can be increased. The introduction of clean and safe production standards, geographical certifications and traceability is of central importance.

Areas and growing areas

The total area of cultivation areas in the province is 26,905.7 hectares, where production is carried out according to organic, GAP and equivalent standards. Currently, there are 32 domestic growing area codes covering 814.75 hectares, and 206 export growing areas covering 349 codes and 9,613.07 hectares are also registered. Particularly noteworthy is the conversion of many fruit tree species to specialist cultivation with high economic value for export.

In addition, 34 packaging facility codes were issued to 16 companies that export their products to markets such as the USA, New Zealand, Europe, China and Thailand. These steps are part of a comprehensive strategy to promote the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.

Innovations in shrimp farming

Another focus is on the positive development of the marine economy, particularly in shrimp farming. Modern approaches in the area of high technology are crucial here. By the end of 2025, an area of 4,100 hectares is targeted for high-tech shrimp farming, which is 102.5% of the original plan. The traceability of shrimp products is ensured by issuing registration codes to 2,382 farms covering an area of 2,785 hectares.

An innovative aspect is the use of the “Map4D GIS platform application”, which enables digitization and management of high-tech shrimp farming in Ben Tre Province. These modern technologies offer promising prospects for the future of agriculture in Vietnam.

Challenges and outlook

But despite these positive developments, there are also challenges. Saltwater intrusion since the beginning of 2021 as well as the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have placed a heavy burden on the agricultural sector. Diseases that affect crops and livestock pose another risk, such as black-headed coconut worm. However, Vietnamese agriculture remains optimistic and continues to focus on strengthening cooperatives and promoting sustainable practices.

Overall, it is clear that the commitment to innovative farming methods and the establishment of stable value chains forms the basis for the future growth of Vietnam's agricultural industry. A holistic view of all aspects, from production to marketing, is essential to ensure long-term success and stability.
