Stock markets on the decline: Investors unsettled by rising US yields
US stock markets failed to hold on to gains on Thursday as bond market yields rose again. The Dow Jones Industrial Index recorded an increase of 0.06 percent to 37,775.38 points at the closing bell. Over the course of the day, the index had increased by almost one percent. The broader S&P 500 index, however, closed 0.22 percent in the red at 5,011.12 points.
The rising interest rates, which are due to a robust US economy and higher than expected inflation, are weighing on stock prices on the stock market. Investors had previously speculated on interest rate cuts, which is now being dampened by rising US yields. On Tuesday, the yield on ten-year US government bonds reached 4.7 percent, the highest level since November 2023.
The Nasdaq 100, the technology-heavy index, fell 0.57 percent to 17,394.31 points. The Nasdaq, which led the stock market's months-long rally, is now increasingly losing importance. The chip industry's losses continue, with companies like NXP Semiconductors, Applied Materials and Micron losing ground.
