Albania is committed to a green future: 1 billion euros for eco-industrial parks!

On May 22, 2025, Albania signed a significant agreement to develop eco-industrial parks. This project, funded by the EU, aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the Albanian economy and increase the competitiveness of the industry. EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato explained that the agreement is intended not only to help industry comply with new European regulations, but also to reduce the environmental impact of production. The focus is on the around 60% of regional exports that go to the EU market.

The Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation (MEKI) of Albania concluded the agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFG). Under this plan, Albania could receive up to 1 billion euros from EU funds, depending on the successful implementation of reforms and commitment to a green and digital transition.

A step towards sustainable growth

The eco-industrial parks are intended to attract new investments, create jobs and promote sustainable growth in the private sector. The EU has agreed to support capital flows that trigger investments and development projects in Albania and the wider region. This agreement is part of a broader EU plan to double the economy of the Western Balkans within a decade.

In a broader initiative, the EU Commission presented the “Clean Industry Deal” to promote the competitiveness and resilience of European industry. The deal aims to accelerate decarbonization and secure the future of manufacturing in Europe. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that it is necessary to remove obstacles such as high energy prices and excessive regulatory burdens.

Key measures of the EU deal

The deal plans to focus on two main sectors: energy-intensive industries and clean technologies. The Commission is planning action plans to strengthen value chains, particularly in the automotive, steel and metals industries. Key factors driving the success of European industry include reducing energy costs and stimulating demand for clean products.

Specific measures include an Affordable Energy Action Plan to reduce energy costs and accelerate the deployment of clean energy. In addition, the EU will mobilize over 100 billion euros to support clean production. The Commission plans to establish a new state aid framework and a dedicated bank for industrial decarbonization. These steps are part of the EU Commission's comprehensive commitment for the 2024-2029 term.

Overall, these two initiatives are not only crucial for the further development of Albania, but also for the entire EU, which wants to create the basis for a future-proof and sustainable industry. Further details and current information are available here RTSH and the EU Commission available.
