Baden-Württemberg is investing 248 million euros in hospital construction in 2025
Baden-Württemberg announced today that a total of 248 million euros will be made available for the construction and modernization of hospitals as part of the 2025 annual hospital construction program. This measure was announced in Stuttgart by the state government and aims to significantly strengthen and modernize health care in the state. In addition to the new construction projects, the flat-rate funding for hospitals will also be increased from 160 to 233 million euros in 2025, which represents a significant increase that will also be increased to 301 million euros next year Medical Journal reported.
A total of over 1.065 billion euros is planned for investment support for hospitals in the 2025/2026 double budget. An additional 300 million euros are available from the 2024/2025 immediate program. The new financing is particularly important as hospital deficits in Baden-Württemberg are expected to reach a record level of one billion euros in 2025. Despite these challenges, at least 73 percent of hospitals in the country are running deficits, underscoring the urgency of investment.
Construction projects and modernizations
A total of seven construction projects and four planning installments to finance construction projects are planned. The locations that benefit from the funding are diverse and include Albbruck, Balingen, Ehingen, Esslingen, Heidelberg, Konstanz, Offenburg, Stuttgart, Wangen im Allgäu and Winnenden. The largest projects in particular are located in Ehingen, Esslingen and Offenburg.
A new logistics center for the Ortenau clinics is being built in Offenburg, while several construction phases to redesign the facilities are planned in Ehingen and Esslingen. This includes operational renovations, the redesign of central functional areas, expansion of bed capacities and the construction of a new nursing school. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann explains the challenges hospitals face and highlights the importance of investments to support these challenges State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg notes.
Health Minister Manne Lucha also emphasizes the crucial role of funding that is specifically earmarked for medical technology, digitalization and construction work. The approved planning rates, including for new buildings in the Stuttgart Clinic, Robert Bosch Hospital and Hochrhein Clinic, are part of the strategic plan to comprehensively transform the hospital landscape in Baden-Württemberg. Heiner Scheffold, CEO of the Baden-Württemberg Hospital Association (BWKG), expresses that the state is more active in promoting investment than other federal states.
The demand to further increase funding in order to ensure the full financing of all needs-based investments is becoming ever louder, especially in view of the increasing deficits in the clinics. The current investments are a step in the right direction to better address the challenges of healthcare in the future.
