BVG is investing a gigantic 3.4 billion euros for Berlin's local transport!

The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) is facing extensive modernization and investment measures that should be completed by 2030 at the latest. BVG boss Henrik Falk emphasizes that the infrastructure must be significantly improved in order to ensure stable local transport for future generations. In addition to basic maintenance, the construction of new depots is also planned for 2024.

In this context, a new tram depot will be built in the Adlershof district. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed by 2030. This new location will provide parking, maintenance and repair capacity for up to 60 vehicles in order to stabilize public transport in southeast Berlin. The site covers around 50,000 square meters and is located on a former coal station.

Modernization and expansion of the infrastructure

In order to meet growing demand, the BVG is planning two new e-bus depots on Köpenicker Landstrasse, Rummelsburger Landstrasse and Säntisstrasse. These new locations are intended to support the conversion of the bus fleet to electric drives. In addition, the existing workshops will be modernized to enable maintenance of the new J and JK subway series.

The replacement of the Waisentunnel is being built in the rail network, which is intended to create an important connection between the U5 and the rest of the subway network. In order to further increase efficiency, digital signaling systems are to be introduced that allow tighter timing and improved control of subway operations.

Financing the measures

In order to finance the comprehensive plans, the BVG has planned investments of around 1.9 billion euros by 2029. In addition, 1.5 billion euros are available for ongoing renovation, as many signal boxes and tracks are in need of renovation. These investments aim to create the foundations for more stable operations and the expansion of the offering.

The BVG is currently faced with challenges that mean that the new depots that have been planned for years are being built later than originally planned. Due to these difficulties, subway traffic in Berlin has to contend with cancellations and delays. After the summer holidays, however, new JK series trains will be used on the U1 to U4 lines, initially on the U2.

Overall, with these measures, the BVG will take a significant step into the future of public transport in Berlin, with the aim of significantly improving the service and adapting it to the city's growing requirements. Particular attention will be paid to the plans for the new depot in Treptow-Köpenick in order to overcome the challenges of tram traffic in the region.
