China buys ASML lithography systems worth 6.4 billion euros - financial expert analyzes the boom in the semiconductor industry in 2023
According to a report from www.heise.de, the lithography systems business was very successful in 2023 despite restraint in the semiconductor industry and panic among memory companies such as Samsung. Dutch equipment manufacturer ASML recorded sales of 27.6 billion euros, an increase of 30 percent compared to 2022. The interest of Chinese chip manufacturers played a major role in this upswing. China invested 6.4 billion euros in ASML lithography systems in 2023, accounting for 29 percent of all revenue from lithography system sales. China buys ASML lithography systems worth 6.4 billion euros - financial expert analyzes the boom in the semiconductor industry in 2023
According to a report by www.heise.de, the lithography systems business was very successful in 2023 despite restraint in the semiconductor industry and panic among memory companies such as Samsung. In comparison, lithography systems worth only 2.9 billion euros were sold to China in 2022.
The export restrictions, introduced by the Netherlands particularly at the insistence of the USA, led to a surge in Chinese interest in ASML machines. This happened especially when the Netherlands restricted the export of DUV systems to China, which are particularly needed for the 7-nanometer generation of the Chinese chip contract manufacturer SMIC. This meant that ASML was only allowed to sell older DUV systems to China, which affected the production of modern chips.
Nevertheless, China invested nearly 37 billion euros in semiconductor equipment in 2023, representing an increase in the global semiconductor market. In addition to ASML's lithography systems, these investments also went into machines for etching and cleaning process steps as well as packaging and testing systems.
Despite the export restrictions, ASML does not expect any significant impact on its business. The company's order books remain full, with a production backlog worth 39 billion euros. ASML expects system sales in 2024 to remain at similar levels to 2023. This was also received positively by the stock market, as ASML shares rose by seven percent and have even increased by around 20 percent since the beginning of the year.
