EU recovery: costs for nature investments are exploding!

The challenges facing the EU in terms of environmental investment are enormous. The EU Restoration Regulation, also known as the Nature Restoration Law, passed in 2024, requires extensive mobilization of financial resources. According to current forecasts, a financing requirement of 154 billion euros will be necessary by 2070 in order to achieve the ecological goals of the regulation. Econews reports that our failure to address environmental policy today could result in high repair costs in the future.

The importance of these investments cannot be underestimated. The estimated public benefit of the ecological measures is an impressive 1,860 billion euros. Gábor Wichmann, Managing Director of BirdLife Austria, warns: Savings in environmental and nature conservation could soon lead to significant crises that would have a negative impact on future generations.

Investing in nature

In order to meet the requirements of the EU Recovery Regulation, a reallocation of financial resources is urgently necessary. BirdLife Austria calls for funding for the LIFE program and rural development within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) not to be cut. These funds play an essential role in protecting biodiversity and the climate.

A spending restructuring proposal aims to limit non-compensatory direct payments and instead invest in effective, science-based measures. This is the only way to secure the necessary financial support for the ecological renewal of Europe, like that Federal Environment Ministry emphasized.

Political responsibility and future prospects

Austria's negotiators at EU level are called upon to advocate for a sustainable distribution of funds. The idea that investments in nature simultaneously represent investments in public interests such as health, safety and quality of life is becoming increasingly important. It is becoming clear that protecting natural resources plays a central role in the future of our planet and is crucial to how future generations will live.
