Europe's upswing in renewable energies: record investments in 2025!
Investments in renewable energy will reach a record high in 2025. Find out more about regional trends and political conditions.
Europe's upswing in renewable energies: record investments in 2025!
Global investment in renewable energy reached a record high of around $386 billion in the first half of 2025, an increase of around 10 percent compared to the previous year. This development is particularly evident in Europe, where spending on new projects increased by around $30 billion, an increase of around 63 percent compared to the second half of 2024. Loud fr.de The political framework in Europe, such as the European Green Deal and the RePowerEU program, is crucial for this positive development. They create planning security for companies and investors who are now increasingly investing in the energy sector.
In contrast, there is a worrying trend in the US, where investment has fallen by more than a third. These declines resulted in a loss of over $20 billion. Despite these regional differences, the global picture remains positive. Renewable energies are still considered a key growth sector in the energy industry, even if investments in large wind and solar parks fell slightly.
Regional differences in development
However, global investments are characterized by regional differences. China remains the largest market for investments in renewable energy with a 44 percent share. While over 70 percent of the expansion of renewable energy capacity took place in Asia, the continent achieved a share of 71 percent of newly installed capacity in 2024. Loud IRENA The increase in capacity for renewable energies was 15 percent.
Europe and North America followed with 12.3 percent and 7.8 percent, respectively. Africa, on the other hand, recorded a modest increase in renewable energy of just 7.2 percent and, together with Eurasia, Central America and the Caribbean, accounted for only 2.8 percent of the global increase. Nevertheless, Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA, calls for targeted political action and international funding to mobilize the global community.
The role of renewable energies
A record annual increase of 582 gigawatts of renewable energy was recorded in 2024. In order to achieve the ambitious goal of 11.2 terawatts by 2030, capacity would have to grow by 16.6 percent annually. Solar and wind power together account for 97.5 percent of all net additions to renewable energy. Solar energy alone grew by 453 gigawatts, while wind energy increased by 114 gigawatts.
By 2023, renewable energy increased to nearly 30 percent of global electricity generation, with electricity generation from renewable sources increasing by 5.6 percent to 8,928 terawatt hours. In comparison, electricity generation from non-renewable sources grew by only 1.2 percent. Although investments in fossil fuels continue, many investors see renewable energy as a safe haven in uncertain times.
