Brilliant Tech ETF: Warren Buffett's Hidden Portfolio
Warren Buffett, a stock market legend at age 93, isn't typically in the spotlight when it comes to investing in technology-based companies. As a proponent of value stocks with solid business models and dividend payouts, the so-called Oracle of Omaha traditionally prefers more conservative investment options. Still, Buffett's investment strategy is surprising when you look at his hidden portfolio, which includes managing billions of dollars.
The investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, under Buffett's leadership, acquired the reinsurance company General Re for $22 billion in 1998. This takeover also brought the investment company New England Asset Management into Buffett's empire. While it's not clear how involved Buffett is in managing these funds, the portfolio is still drawing attention from investors, particularly because of its positions in exciting technology companies.
One notable revelation from Buffett's hidden portfolio is his holding in an ETF, the Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund. This ETF was acquired by a Buffett subsidiary in the fourth quarter of 2021 and focuses on around 313 stocks in the information technology sector. Since its inception in 2004, the ETF has seen a huge increase of over 1,000 percent and returned around 50 percent over a three-year period. Despite a comparatively low expense ratio of 0.1 percent, this ETF is rated by Vanguard with a high risk profile of five (out of five). The fund's largest holdings include companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Broadcom and salesforce.com.
However, trading with this ETF is challenging for German investors. A possible alternative could be the iShares S&P 500 Information Technology Sector UCITS ETF, which has similar top holdings to the Vanguard ETF. Buffett's interest in this tech ETF reflects that even one of the world's best-known value investors is following the potential of the technology sector and thus benefiting from the digital revolution.
