Big plans for Ho Chi Minh City: Subway line 4 in focus!

The transport network in Ho Chi Minh City could soon expand significantly. Bui Xuan Cuong, vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, has ordered the Ministry of Finance to work with the Ministry of Construction to examine the Sovico Group Joint Stock Company's proposals. This plans to research and invest in subway line 4, which connects Dong Thanh (Hoc Mon) with Hiep Phuoc (Nha Be) and is over 47.3 km long.

The review process is scheduled to be completed by June 15, 2025. Sovico Group, known as the founding shareholder of Vietjet Air, submitted an official application to the People's Committee on June 2nd. With this initiative, the company aims to contribute to the infrastructure development and socio-economic development of Ho Chi Minh City.

Details about subway line 4

The new subway line 4 will cover a complex route covering several significant districts and points: Dong Thanh - Thanh Xuan - Ha Huy Giap - Nguyen Oanh - Nguyen Kiem - Tan Son Nhat T1, T2 - Truong Son - Nguyen Van Troi - Kanal Nhieu Loc - Hai Ba Trung - Pasteur - Ben Thanh - Nguyen Thai Hoc - Ton Dan - Nguyen Huu Tho. The route will run more than 25 km underground and almost 22 km above ground and includes a total of 37 stations, 21 of which are underground and 16 above ground.

The depot locations are planned in Dong Thanh and Hiep Phuoc. Details of the total investment in the project have not yet been disclosed by Sovico. Vingroup has also proposed its own subway project that would connect District 7 with Can Gio. Sovico plans to create a new legal entity to implement the project and intends to collaborate with foreign experts.

The current status of the subway in Ho Chi Minh City

Parallel to the planned subway line 4, subway line 1, the first line of the Ho Chi Minh City metro project, is already running. This is expected to open on December 22, 2024 and will connect Bến Thành Market with Suối Tiên over a total length of 19.7 km with 14 stations, including 3 underground stations. Construction work on this line began in 2012 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2018.

The route is part of a comprehensive plan that was first proposed in 2001 and has now been expanded to six lines with a total length of 107 km. The implementation is part of the city's 2020 transport master plan, which also includes various monorail and light rail lines.

With these initiatives, Ho Chi Minh City shows great ambition in modernizing and expanding its local transport system to meet the growing needs of the population and sustainably improve the city's infrastructure.
