Hamburg Airport: Award for best airport and green future!
Hamburg Airport recently won the prestigious “Best Airport Award 2025”. Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport, expressed his delight at the award and emphasized that it is a motivating confirmation of the work done. An important success factor for the award was the continuous improvement of the service offering, which is supported by targeted investments.
Over 80 percent of travelers at Hamburg Airport pass through security in less than ten minutes. This efficiency is made possible by automated processes and modern technologies. Part of the “HAM Upgrade” modernization program aims to further improve the experience at the airport and goes hand in hand with the introduction of innovative solutions such as smart gates and the “Slot & Fly” reservation system, which offers faster routes to security checks.
Investments in service and climate protection
The airport operators have decided to invest around 20 million euros in further service measures. Large amounts of money are also flowing into the climate protection program “Net Zero 2035”, which has a total of 250 million euros. This comprehensive program demonstrates the airport's commitment to implementing environmentally friendly measures and using sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.
With the goal of becoming CO2-neutral by 2035, Hamburg Airport is planning to be the first large airport in Germany to gradually reduce fossil CO2 emissions to zero. This is achieved through technical changes and energy savings. An important part of this climate strategy, which runs under the motto "Net Zero 2035 - Now. For the Future", is the construction of its own wind farm near Kaltenkirchen in Schleswig-Holstein, for which around 70 million euros are earmarked.
Sustainable energy supply
Hamburg Airport has been operating CO2-neutrally since 2021. In order to achieve an independent, 100 percent renewable energy and heat supply, the airport has ambitious plans that aim to completely convert to renewable energies. These measures are part of an overarching European commitment aimed at drastically reducing fossil greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
With these initiatives, Hamburg Airport not only stands out for its excellent service, but also positions itself as a pioneer in the environmentally friendly design of the aviation industry. In accordance with the goals of the ACI (Airports Council International), European airports such as Hamburg are promoting sustainable change in aviation.
