Hamburg's port: billion-dollar expansion decided for the future!

The Port of Hamburg is facing a comprehensive expansion that will be realized in the coming years. The city of Hamburg and the transshipment company Eurogate have agreed on a joint initiative in Waltershof, which includes several new berths for container ships as well as around 40 hectares of additional storage space for containers. This measure is crucial in order to meet the growing demands of global container traffic.

The entrance to Waltershofer Hafen will be widened to make room for larger ships. The total costs of the project amount to around 1.1 billion euros for the city of Hamburg. Eurogate also plans to invest at least 700 million euros in the expansion of the new container terminal. Construction is scheduled to begin in the mid-2030s. Still, the plan must be approved by the EU Commission, a process that could take several years.

Growing requirements in container handling

Forecasts show that container throughput in the Port of Hamburg is expected to increase from 9 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2023 to over 25.3 million TEU annually by 2025. This trend is reinforced by the increasing size and depth of container ships, highlighting the need for sufficient port capacity. In order to meet this challenge, various areas of action for port development must be addressed, including upgrading existing infrastructure and increasing productivity at the terminals.

There are currently four important container terminals in the Port of Hamburg: the CTH Container Terminal Hamburg, the Eurogate CTB Container Terminal Burchardkai, the HHLA CTA Container Terminal Altenwerder and the HHLA CTT Container Terminal Tollerort. The expansion of terminal capacities is directly linked to the deepening of the Elbe, which represents another necessary measure.

Long-term planning and investments

Planning for the expansion of the port has been going on since the 1990s and all lawsuits against the port expansion have been dismissed. Historical turnover figures demonstrate the necessity of these initiatives. In 2006, 8.9 million TEU were achieved with an annual capacity of 9.2 million TEU. Planned capacities should increase to almost 18 million TEU in 2015 and to 25 million TEU by 2025.

The total costs for the port expansion and renovation measures amount to around 1,182,191,000 euros. Terminal operators are responsible for the superstructure, such as the container gantry systems, as well as for productivity increases, while the city of Hamburg makes the investments in the port and traffic areas. These comprehensive expansion measures are therefore essential to establish Hamburg as one of the leading container ports in Europe and to ensure the city's competitiveness.

In summary, it can be said that the future development of the Port of Hamburg will not only create needed capacities, but will also play an essential role in the global trade network.
