Ho Chi Minh City women are knocking on the door: semi-finals with fighting spirit!

On May 23, 2025, Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club reached the semi-finals of the 2024-2025 Women's AFC Champions League with a remarkable performance. This is a testament to the team's progress in international competition. In the quarterfinals, the team staged a spectacular comeback against Abu Dhabi, winning 5-4 despite trailing 3-0 at half-time. Coach Doan Thi Kim Chi acknowledged the support of officials and fans and emphasized that this support was crucial to the players' success.

Unfortunately, the team fell 0-2 from the tournament in the semi-finals against Wuhan Jiangda. However, coach Kim Chi expressed concerns about young players' loss of confidence during the tournament. She sees the need to improve the quality of local players and invest in better training conditions.

Challenges for the team

Despite its remarkable achievements, the Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Club faces major challenges. Compared to the semi-finalists from Australia, Korea and China, the team is at a severe disadvantage in terms of investment, expertise and physical condition. The team trains primarily on an artificial turf pitch and only has access to natural grass before important tournaments.

The limited budget also makes it difficult to sign long-term foreign players who could be important for the team's development. Currently, three U.S. players earn about $1,300 per month, making their long-term commitment to the club difficult. Short-term commitments also hinder the integration of foreign players into the team.

Outlook for the future

For the 2026 season, clubs in the national championship will be allowed to sign a foreign player, which could open up new opportunities for Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club. Coach Kim Chi emphasizes that in the coming period it will be crucial to optimize the competitive conditions and further develop the club's talents in order to be successful in international football.
