Iberia invests 600 million: La Muñoza becomes the future of aviation!

The Spanish airline Iberia has big plans for the coming years, particularly concerning the development of its headquarters in Madrid. Loud Aerotelegraph The airline will move its headquarters to the newly planned “Ciudad Iberia” at Madrid-Barajas Airport by 2027. This change, which coincides with the airline's 100th anniversary, is part of the comprehensive "Plan de Vuelo 2030" and marks a decisive step in Iberia's realignment.

Iberia's existing headquarters at Calle Martínez Villergas 49 was brought together in one location in 2013 under the leadership of Luis Gallego, after previously having several locations spread throughout the city. Airline boss Marco Sansavini confirmed that the “Ciudad Iberia” will house a new, modern administrative center as well as workshops for aircraft engine maintenance. In particular, there is a focus on innovative training and further education opportunities in cooperation with universities in order to develop Madrid into a center for qualified talent in the European aviation sector.

Investments and infrastructure

The investment volume for the new “Ciudad Iberia” amounts to around 600 million euros, which is planned for the modernization of existing buildings and the creation of new facilities. A further 200 million euros in investments are expected from supplier companies, which will significantly increase the overall effort for this project. The site, which has been owned by Iberia since the 1970s, already includes hangars, a pilot training center and catering kitchens. These will now be supplemented by workshops and other innovative areas that focus on modern engines and technologies such as sustainable fuels (SAF) and hydrogen.

A central element of the project will be an education center that will establish an aviation school for various target groups to develop a wide range of talents, including youth, women and people with disabilities. Additionally, the new headquarters is expected to create more than 11,000 jobs, nearly doubling the number of daily employees at La Muñoza.

Technological innovation and sustainable development

The “Ciudad Iberia” will function not only as an administrative center, but also as an important center for technological innovation and aviation operations. The entire construction is designed to be CO2 neutral and sustainable. This underlines Iberia's goal of becoming one of the most modern aviation centers in Europe. If the plan is successfully implemented, Iberia could deploy up to 70 long-haul aircraft and achieve a market share of 64 percent, comparable to the largest European airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM and Air France in their respective hubs.

Finally, Iberia also plans to expand Terminal 4 at Madrid-Barajas Airport with a budget of 1.7 billion euros in order to further strengthen the airline's focus and overcome the challenges of the desired growth. The focus is clearly on Madrid, while further long-haul flights from Barcelona-El Prat Airport are to remain ruled out for the time being. With these measures, Iberia aims to develop Madrid into an international hub and a leading European airport.
