According to a report from www.pcgameshardware.de, the third quarter of 2023 exceeded forecasts for global PC shipments, with volume still down 7.2 percent year-over-year. IDC predicts PC market recovery by 2024 despite declining volumes
According to a report by www.pcgameshardware.de, the third quarter of 2023 managed to exceed forecasts for global PC shipments, with volume still down 7.2 percent year-over-year. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the reasons for this are both the increase in inventories and increases in import duties. However, the IDC still expects the market to recover in 2024.
Analysts at IDC have lowered their forecast for the global PC market due to the uncertain market situation and expect a 13.8 percent decline in shipment volumes for 2023 compared to 2022. This would mark two consecutive years of double-digit declines after a decline of 16.6 percent in 2022, which would represent an unprecedented trend in the PC market.
Despite these figures, the IDC expects the market to recover in 2024. This recovery will be supported by a PC refresh cycle and the integration of AI functions. Increasing demand for migration to Windows 11 and the aging of commercial PCs, which will pass the four-year mark by 2024, are seen as driving this recovery. Likewise, the integration of AI features into PCs is expected to positively impact certain segments of the enterprise PC market.
Overall, the situation in the PC market remains challenging, but historical data shows that current declines are more moderate compared to previous years. According to Jay Chou, research manager for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, this provides some consolation in a difficult market situation. Despite the expectation of eight consecutive quarters of annual volume declines by the end of 2023, the situation still remains better than the period from Q2 2012 to Q4 2016, when there were 19 quarters of annual PC declines.
For the PC market, IDC's forecast suggests that 2024 could be a year of recovery and restructuring, supported by the PC refresh cycle and the integration of new technologies such as AI capabilities.
How www.pcgameshardware.de reports, this could represent an important phase for the industry and consumers.
