Fight against erosion: Tien Giang invests VND 249 billion!
Tien Giang province in the Mekong Delta is facing an increasingly serious problem: erosion along its rivers and canals. Severe landslides, especially on Channel 28 in Cai Be District, not only disrupt people's lives but also endanger their movement. In response, the province is investing in extensive infrastructure to curb erosion. A landslide control project on the Cai Be River will receive funding of over VND249 billion, with approximately VND200 billion coming from the central budget capital and the rest from the provincial budget. The dam, which has a length of 2.67 km and consists of 11 sections, is already 96% completed and is expected to be operational by the end of June 2024, bringing great relief to the population.
However, landslides are not the only problem. According to reports from the province's Department of Agriculture and Development, there have already been 92 cases of erosion this year, almost equal to last year's total, VietnamNet reported. The affected rivers and canals, such as the Vam Ve River and the Bai Ray River, require urgent measures to prevent damage to homes, roads and infrastructure.
Investments and measures to combat erosion
Another project that has attracted the attention of the provincial administration is the Anti-Landslide Dam Project in Con Ngang, with a total length of 6.8 km and a deposit of over VND238 billion. Modern wave-reducing dike technology is used to increase efficiency.
Areas such as the old My Thuan ferry terminal on the Tien River, where landslides pose a massive threat to the lives of local residents, are also particularly affected. Locals use trees as temporary anchors to stabilize the banks. The risk of landslides has increased significantly in Hoa Hung, An Huu, Tan Thanh and Cai Be municipalities. In addition, the Cai Be District People's Committee plans to invest in another 540 meter section of dam at the end of 2024 to further improve the situation.
Long-term perspectives and challenges
To address erosion challenges in the long term, the province proposes to request VND295 billion for measures to curb erosion of the Tien River dike. Further projects to resettle vulnerable areas are planned for 2024, with two specific projects envisaged in Tan Hoa and Tan Thien. The need for non-structural measures such as public education and reforestation along river banks is also emphasized.
In total, Tien Giang Province has invested in 27 erosion prevention projects between 2016 and 2024, with a total cost of VND1,303 billion. To combat erosion, VND69 billion was allocated to repair 83 severely eroded sites. However, experts warn that the region is at massive risk in the future if sand mining is uncontrolled Vietnam.vn.
