Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Almost two billion euros for schools and security!

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can look forward to significant support from Berlin, as the state is receiving almost two billion euros from the federal government's investment package. This sum, which is to be distributed over a period of twelve years, will be used for a variety of projects. This includes, among other things, the renovation of school buildings and police buildings as well as measures for digitalization and strengthening the infrastructure. Laura Pooth, chairwoman of the DGB North, announced this news after an “investment summit” that was also attended by the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Manuela Schwesig (SPD). The funds are financed through debt, which makes long-term planning and implementation of the projects easier, reports star.

The distribution of investment funds was intensively discussed by various actors. Before the summit, representatives of associations and political parties made their expectations and demands clear. The district council advocates making two thirds of the funds available to the local level, especially for the renovation of roads, bridges and schools, such as World reported.

Demands and expectations

In addition, representatives of the wind energy industry are calling for targeted investments in the network infrastructure in order to accelerate the expansion of renewable energies. Another topic that shaped the discussion is the need for investment in the area of internal security. The police union complained that it had not been invited to the talks, which caused discontent. The CDU in the state parliament also expressed incomprehension about their non-participation in the deliberations.

The Greens took the opportunity to submit a motion for the upcoming plenary session in which they demand 50 percent of the special funds provided by the federal government for climate protection measures. This illustrates the diverse spectrum of demands placed on the investment package.

The path to implementation

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig is planning a further discussion about the distribution of funds and sees the need to quickly create legal requirements with the federal government for the implementation of the investment package. She emphasizes the importance that municipalities should not be restricted in their investment opportunities by federal funds. It must be ensured that the state funds can be made available beyond this, i.e. additionally. The CDU parliamentary group leader, Daniel Peters, made it clear that many projects in the municipalities are waiting to be implemented.

Schwesig has announced that he will inform the state parliament about the results of the investment summit on Wednesday. This shows how important transparent communication and ongoing exchange with political bodies is for the successful implementation of projects.
