Microsoft invests $1.5 billion in Emirati AI company
Microsoft has announced that it will invest $1.5 billion in Emirati AI company G42. This investment will serve to deepen existing collaboration and further expand Microsoft's leading position in the AI industry. G42 has distanced itself from its ties to Chinese companies, particularly by selling shares earlier this year.
The United States and China have been competing for technological influence in the Gulf region for some time. The partnership between Microsoft and G42 will enable both companies to jointly bring AI technologies, digital infrastructure and services to underserved countries. As part of the deal, G42 will use Microsoft cloud services and join a security agreement negotiated with the US government.
Microsoft President Brad Smith will take a seat on G42's board. The partnership aims to protect the intellectual property behind AI programs. An additional initiative includes the creation of a $1 billion shared investment fund for software developers. This investment by Microsoft also represents a strategic move to counter China's growing influence in the Gulf region and strengthen the company's leadership position in the AI industry.
