MVV Energie: Record investments for a climate-friendly future in Mannheim!
MVV Energie AG has announced that it will continue to advance its strategy for a climate-friendly energy supply. Despite challenging conditions in the international markets, which are particularly characterized by a changed political situation in the USA, the company is planning significant investments in the energy transition.
In the first nine months of the 2025 financial year, MVV recorded an adjusted EBIT of 323 million euros, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year, which is primarily due to falling sales revenue. These fell from 5.9 to 4.9 billion euros and are the result of falling wholesale prices and lower sales volumes for electricity and gas, such as Metropol Journal reported.
Investments and projects
Investments in the reporting period amounted to 301 million euros, an increase of 50 million euros compared to the previous year. This volume is the second highest in the company's history. Particularly noteworthy are the projects that focus on the expansion of green heat, green electricity and new products and services. The most important projects include the construction of a new switchgear in Mannheim, the expansion of the high-voltage network in Offenbach, the Freudenberg solar park with an output of 13.5 MW and the Olsberg wind farm, which supplies almost 23,000 households with electricity and is the first onshore wind farm in Germany to operate in the balancing reserve market.
The CEO of MVV, who emphasizes the need to expand the networks, has announced that he will offer 100 percent green district heating across the group by 2035. This is happening five years earlier than originally planned and involves investments of around 7 billion euros in green growth by 2033, more than double the previous plan. The district heating generation in Mannheim and Offenbach should come from climate-neutral sources by 2030, while the aim is to convert the gas-fired thermal power plant in Kiel to hydrogen by 2035 Energie.de reported.
Climate goals of MVV Energie AG
A central goal of MVV is to achieve negative overall emissions by 2035. In the current 2023 financial year, the company has already invested 344 million euros in sustainable growth. These investments are the highest volume in the last eight years. Special measures include the use of “Bioenergy Carbon Capture Usage and Storage” to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere, with a pilot plant in Mannheim testing CO2 capture and liquefaction.
MVV is also focusing on densifying the district heating network and expanding decentralized heating solutions, particularly through heat pumps. The goal is to reduce the overall carbon footprint to net zero by 2035, including all greenhouse gas sources.
Overall, with these measures and investments, MVV Energie AG shows a clear focus on implementing a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply that takes into account not only ecological but also economic aspects.
