Phu Quoc: Government approves sand mining for APEC 2027 project!
The Vietnamese government recently granted approval for sea sand mining in the Bai Dat Do public beach area in An Thoi District, Phu Quoc City. This measure is part of the preparations for APEC 2027, which will take place in Vietnam. Sea sand mining is essential to provide necessary construction materials for dike construction as well as land leveling and the APEC Conference Center. The responsible authority for this project is the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and deciding on public investment projects and applying investor selection procedures.
As part of the planned preparations, there is a significant need for raw materials. A total of 10 million m³ of sea sand, 3.2 million m³ of building stones and 1.4 million m³ of fill soil are required to hold the APEC summit. To meet this need, two marine sand mines with a total area of 426 hectares are planned, with estimated sand reserves of 16 million m³.
Transport and material use
The local infrastructure is also a significant factor in the implementation of the project. The building stones are transported to Phu Quoc from two quarries, Tra Duoc Lon and Hon Soc. In addition, a surplus material estimated at 8 million m³ in the waters of Cua Can and Duong Dong (6 million m³ and 2 million m³ respectively) will be put to good use.
The Prime Minister stressed that the infrastructure being built to support APEC 2027 should also support long-term growth for Phu Quoc. The development is intended to not only support the upcoming summit but also improve the region's overall economic prospects. The investments are therefore not only important for the APEC conference, but also represent a basis for the sustainable development of the city.
The government's approach is therefore seen as a strategic step to transform Phu Quoc into a dynamic growth region and to ensure that the measures prepared lead to positive effects on the local economy.
These projects fall within the framework of a comprehensive development plan that is crucial for Vietnam to remain competitive at the international level while promoting environmentally friendly practices.
