Government plans major expansion of the north-south expressway!

The Vietnamese government plans to expand the eastern sections of the North-South Expressway to meet the needs of socio-economic development, security and defense. Planned measures

The Ministry of Construction is tasked with developing specific principles, criteria and conditions for the expansion of the motorway sections. The aim is to simplify the construction process and avoid wasting assets. To accelerate project progress, resource mobilization mechanisms are being reviewed. A report to the Prime Minister is due in May 2025.

The expansion is part of a larger plan that includes the North-South Expressway, also known as Đường cao tốc Bắc – Nam. This expressway connects the cities of Hanoi and Can Thơ and has a total planned length of 1,941 kilometers, passing through several provinces including Hà Nam, Thanh Hóa and Ho Chi Minh City, such as Wikipedia reported.

Financing and outlook

The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately $18.5 billion. In addition, a high-speed railway line is being planned parallel to the expressway, which will further improve transport connections. Overall, however, the completion of the entire route is still pending after the originally set date for 2020.

The government's efforts are aimed at not only making the North-South Expressway a backbone of the national infrastructure, but also significantly increasing the quality of life and economic development in the regions along the route.
