Record investments in green energy: $2.2 trillion in 2025!

Investments in climate-friendly energy production are increasing worldwide despite the ongoing economic downturn. A focus is on the USA, Europe and China. Loud fr.de The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects record investments of $2.2 trillion in renewable energies and nuclear power in 2025. In comparison, the investment in fossil fuels is estimated at $1.1 trillion.

The main reasons for the increase in investments are primarily the need for energy security and the increasing demand for electricity driven by the growing demands of data centers, electromobility and cooling. The IEA is also calling for increased investment in power grids, with a planned spending volume of $400 billion in 2025 for pylons and lines.

Challenges caused by approval procedures

Despite the significant amounts of investment, the financing of electricity networks remains below expectations. This is due to lengthy approval processes and strained supply chains. Investments in “clean energy” include not only renewable energy, but also nuclear power plants, energy storage and energy efficiency measures.

The largest single investment is expected at $450 billion in solar, while investment in nuclear power is estimated at about $75 billion, up 50% compared to 2020. China is the largest investor here, investing twice as much as the EU and even as much as the EU and the USA combined.

China and coal expansion

Although China is investing in renewable energy, the country is also continuing to build coal-fired power plants due to its high demand for electricity. Last year, projects with almost 100 gigawatts of power were approved. The construction of new coal-fired power plants worldwide has reached its highest level since 2015.

The important global energy data comes significantly from the IEA and its Energy Data Centre. This center is considered an authoritative source of comprehensive energy data and currently covers up to 95% of global energy supply. The IEA assesses and disseminates energy statistics that are central to analyzing and tracking clean energy developments.

The IEA's close collaboration with national offices and other relevant stakeholders ensures the quality of the data collected and enables comprehensive analyzes of energy-related developments worldwide.
