Schleswig-Holstein's outdoor swimming pools in need: millions needed for renovations!
In Schleswig-Holstein, many outdoor swimming pools are in need of massive renovations that run into the millions. This is proven by a survey that shows that all of the ten larger cities in the state surveyed see an urgent need for action with their swimming pools. Particularly alarming are the blatant conditions of the facilities, which often date back to the 1960s and 1970s and struggle with outdated technology and structural damage. Mayor Rolf Apfeld from Glückstadt cites the urban example of the 60-year-old Fortuna-Bad, whose renovation costs are estimated at up to 8 million euros in order to realize the long-overdue renovation.
The social importance of outdoor pools is undisputed for many communities in Schleswig-Holstein. These facilities not only provide recreational opportunities but also important memories for the population. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) reports that almost every second fourth grader in Schleswig-Holstein cannot swim safely, which underlines the role of outdoor pools in children's swimming training, especially in regions without indoor pools.
Renovation offensive in Drelsdorf
An example of active action is the community of Drelsdorf, which decided to renovate its outdoor swimming pool after it was closed for two years. The renovation costs amount to around 1.4 million euros, with the municipality hoping for state funding of around 100,000 euros. The initiative is supported by volunteers who want to help reopen the outdoor pool by summer 2026.
In Glückstadt, the city is now applying for funding for the renovation of the Fortuna pool, which is scheduled to be renovated in autumn 2025. The importance of these facilities is emphasized by municipalities who want to maintain their outdoor pools despite the high costs.
Funding programs for sports facilities
Additional federal funding has also been applied for for three specific projects, including the construction of the new outdoor swimming pool in Weiche and the expansion of a sports hall in Hohenwestedt. Further information about funding for sports facilities is available on the Schleswig-Holstein website.
Overall, it is clear that the challenge of the dilapidated outdoor pools is not only of a financial nature, but also represents an urgent need to sustainably promote swimming and the associated safety in Schleswig-Holstein.
