Schmachtenhagen: Village idyll meets urgent investments!
In the picturesque district of Schmachtenhagen, which belongs to the city of Oranienburg, village life is an idyll, but one that urgently needs investment. Here women are chatting in the walkway while one of them is watering the plants. Hannelorerechnerberger (75) describes the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the place with a variety of shopping opportunities, doctors and colorful greenery in the area. The Bäke River, which flows through the town, is not only a scenic attraction, but is also considered a kind of “baptism” for the villagers when they jump into the water.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Lenny Funke is waiting at the bus stop for the PlusBus (825), which runs between Oranienburg and Bernau. Buses 805 and 825 offer hourly service during the week, while there is a two-hour service on weekends. This well-thought-out connection is important for Schmachtenhagen's growing population. The district, which, with a population of almost 3,000, ranks third among Oranienburg's districts, is already planning further new building projects. These include 30 tiny houses, 150 parking spaces for caravans as well as a restaurant, an event house and a wellness building.
Important developments and challenges
Despite the positive development, Schmachtenhagen faces challenges. The mayor Katrin Kittel (FWO) has surprisingly announced her resignation as she will be moving at the end of the year. The village community's topics are varied: the expansion of the daycare and school campus is a central concern. Containers have already been set up and a new sports hall is being planned. The local daycare center, which is called “Schmachtenhagener Zwerge”, has been working for years with a temporary exemption that is valid until the end of 2028.
The daycare center offers comprehensive care for children from two months of age to primary school age from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. With a capacity of 40 places, divided into 20 places for the crèche and 20 for the kindergarten, the facility is an important part of early childhood care in Schmachtenhagen. The concept follows the Brandenburg educational plan and relies on individual support, language support integrated into everyday life and close cooperation with parents.
Community and activities
Various events help to strengthen the village community, such as the upcoming village festival on September 12th and 13th. In addition to a torchlight parade and musical performances, dance events are also planned. The local history association also hopes to convert the old daycare center into a village community center and small museum.
The positive voices from residents confirm the district's upward development. Cindy Devrient (37) and her daughter Mathea enjoy village life and the neighborhood, while Werner Geßner (57) and his daughter Josephine (8) have been very satisfied with the infrastructure since moving in 2022. The Gasthof Niegisch, which offers country line dance courses and attracts participants from all over the area, provides social activities.
All of these aspects make it clear that Schmachtenhagen is not only an idyllic place, but also has to overcome challenges in order to continue to ensure the quality of life for its residents. However, the combination of village community, vibrant culture and innovative projects offers a promising outlook for the future.
