Schwerin's new budget: tax increase for 2000 companies decided!

The state capital Schwerin has decided on a new budget for the current year NDR reported. This plan introduces key measures to financially stabilize the city. An important component is the budgetary block in selected areas in order to control costs and create scope for necessary investments.

It was also decided to increase the trade tax rate by eight points. This increase will affect approximately 2,000 businesses in the city. The approval of the Ministry of the Interior ensured that the budget could be approved and financial resources could be made available through tax adjustments and savings.

Investments and voluntary contributions

Thanks to the new budget, important investments can now begin in the next few months. These include the construction of a world heritage museum and the establishment of a community center in the Lankow district. These projects are not only important for urban development, but also for the cultural enhancement of the region.

The city also ensures voluntary services that are of considerable importance to citizens. This includes free school transport for grades 5 to 13 as well as financial support for the Ataraxia music school. These measures show the city administration's commitment to maintaining social and cultural offerings even in financially difficult times.

Voting results and political reactions

The budget was approved by a majority of 26 city representatives, with the AfD and one member of the FDP parliamentary group voting against the plan. This highlights the political differences within the city council, which are partly due to the city's difficult financial situation.

A similar household day is also being planned in Herborn. A shortfall in the ordinary result for 2025 of €7,689,785 is expected. While a balanced budget in the strict sense is not possible, a budget security concept is drawn up on a voluntary basis Herborn reported. The budget can be balanced “in the broader sense” through reserves.

Both cities face similar challenges when it comes to financial planning. It remains to be seen how the measures will be received in Schwerin and whether Herborn can successfully implement similar solutions.
