Beach Renovations in Puerto de la Cruz: A New Summer for Tourists!
Puerto de la Cruz has ambitious plans to promote tourism and improve the comfort of its beaches. The redevelopment plan, which is already underway, aims to significantly improve the user experience during the summer season. The Canary Islands government is making a significant financial contribution of 672,647 euros to expand and modernize the tourist infrastructure on the coast. This was approved on July 10, 2025 as part of the loan extension, after initially earmarking 1.2 million euros for the “Tourist infrastructures and integral management of tourist centers” program.
The focus is particularly on the renovation work on the beach at San Telmo, which is intended to make access to the bathing area easier. Redesigns are also taking place in the Castillo Beach area, where a large part of the Callados is to be removed. New wooden walkways are planned for Playa Jardín, which will improve accessibility to the popular beach area. The work on Martiánez beach also aims to create a more pleasant environment. The Councilor for Beaches, Felipe Rodríguez, monitors the progress of the work, while Mayor Leopoldo José Afonso highlights the importance of collaboration with the Canary Islands Government for coastal infrastructure.
Reopening of Playa Jardín
The situation at Playa Jardín, which has been closed since summer 2024 due to environmental problems, remains tense. The closure is due to malfunctions in the sewage system that led to polluting wastewater discharges. However, the measures are progressing according to plan thanks to repair work on the wastewater infrastructure. The Orotava Valley sewage treatment plant is nearing completion and the rehabilitation of the Punta Brava tailwater drain is progressing successfully. These measures are crucial to restoring coastal water quality.
Technical experts report good progress and authorities are optimistic about meeting the reopening schedule - assuming there are no unexpected delays. The closure of the beach had not only ecological but also economic consequences for the region. Local business owners saw a significant decline in revenue. The reopening of Playa Jardín will not only increase the city's tourist attractiveness, but also represent an important step towards economic recovery.
Strategic measures for the coast
The planned measures in Puerto de la Cruz are in line with the Canary Islands' tourism infrastructure strategy. This includes, among other things, the installation of 2,300 new parasols on Lago Martiánez and the replacement of dilapidated waste containers. New railings and improved lighting at the Martiánez Tunnel as well as the renovation of the public toilets on the pier are also planned. All of these investments are crucial not only for improving the infrastructure, but also for securing the long-term tourist attraction of the region.
In summary, Puerto de la Cruz, through the support of the Canary Islands Government and extensive investments, aims to significantly improve both the tourist infrastructure and the environmental conditions on its beaches.
