Drinking water prices in Osnabrück are rising: This is what you need to know!
From July 1, 2025, drinking water prices in Osnabrück will increase. As the Stadtwerke Osnabrück (SWO) announced, the price for 1,000 liters of drinking water will rise from 1.99 euros to 2.08 euros gross. The adaptation takes place as part of necessary investments in the drinking water infrastructure, which is essential for future supply.
The basic price remains unaffected by the increase. Tino Schmelzle, Managing Director of SWO Netz, emphasizes the relevance of these investments in order to sustainably ensure the quality of drinking water. These measures are part of a comprehensive infrastructure project that the city is supporting with over 120 million euros.
Investments in infrastructure
The major projects planned include the new construction of the Thiene waterworks, the construction of a new transport pipeline from Thiene to Osnabrück and the construction of a new elevated water tank on Schinkelberg. The investments are made as part of the water sustainability program. These initiatives are necessary to cope with the increasing costs of operation and maintenance, which are not least caused by a high maintenance rate.
The price adjustment has a concrete impact on households. For a single household with a consumption of 50 cubic meters per year, additional annual costs of around 4 euros arise. A family of four with a consumption of 150 cubic meters must expect additional costs of around 13 euros.
Price comparison with other cities
The price increases are between 2 and 3 percent. Compared to other cities in Lower Saxony, water prices in Osnabrück remain in the middle range. The managing director considers this moderate increase to be necessary in order to ensure the long-term performance of the water supply.
One cubic meter of water can be used in many ways. For example, it is equivalent to 22 washing machine wash cycles, is enough for 5,555 cups of coffee or allows you to prepare 200 portions of pasta. In addition, one cubic meter covers the average person's water needs for around nine days.
Stadtwerke Osnabrück will inform its customers in a timely manner about the upcoming changes in order to promote transparency and understanding. The adjustment of water prices is a step that is intended to ensure the long-term preservation and quality of the water supply in Osnabrück.
