First free diversity test: Promote and evaluate companies now!

From May 19, 2025, companies will be able to take a free diversity self-test to support their self-assessment of their diversity measures. This unique model was developed by the IU International University in collaboration with the Charter of Diversity. It is the first of its kind in Germany that can be used free of charge and with a low threshold and is aimed at all sizes of companies, from micro and small businesses to medium-sized companies and large corporations. The diversity maturity model was designed by professors Sonja Würtemberger and Katharina-Maria Rehfeld as well as Corina Christen and Şeyma Erdi.

The model is based on comprehensive qualitative interviews with diversity and inclusion experts and aims to assess the current state of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in companies. Employers can use the test to define practical steps to improve their DEI efforts. An IU study shows that 75.1% of future professionals expect potential employers to implement diversity and inclusion measures. 38.2% of respondents see equal opportunities as one of the three most important reasons for choosing a company.

The development of the model

The research project to develop the diversity maturity model aims to create a model for measuring diversity and inclusion in companies and organizations. Those responsible in companies are invited to answer specific questions and assess their organization themselves. This process leads to an evaluation and the provision of tips for improvement. The current market situation is characterized by mostly paid and English-language models, which is why the team wanted to establish a free offer for German-speaking countries.

In collaboration with the Charter of Diversity, an association that advocates for more diversity in the world of work, the model offers a clear definition of diversity based on the Diversity Wheel by Lee Gardenswartz and Anita Rowe. The core dimensions include age, ethnic origin, gender, physical and mental abilities, religion, sexual orientation and social background.

Practical application and recommendations

The model offers companies security and orientation by being based on clear criteria. Self-assessments can vary greatly: Some companies are actively committed to diversity and inclusion, while others are less visible. Through interviews with experts on employee life cycle topics, basic recommendations for good practices are developed, which are based on the attitude of management.

The recommendations include documenting company values, using gender-appropriate language in job advertisements and checking the gender ratio and possible impairments in the company. The official launch of the diversity maturity model will take place on May 27, 2025 as part of the German Diversity Day in Berlin, which will be an excellent opportunity for companies to actively address the issue of diversity.
