Germany's micro and small companies are showing increasing openness to digitalization, but artificial intelligence (AI) has so far played a subordinate role. This emerges from the current commercial insurance report 2024, in which around 750 micro and small companies were surveyed. The self-employed want to advance digitalization particularly in the areas of accounting (49 percent), marketing (37 percent) and sales (30 percent). Although 46 percent see AI as an opportunity, 68 percent of respondents had not taken any action to use AI by the summer of this year. Besonders kleine Baubetriebe zeigen wenig Interesse an KI.

AI in the construction industry: Micro and small businesses show little interest, according to the 2024 Commercial Insurance Report.

Small construction companies in particular show little interest in AI. In a survey of 103 small businesses in the construction industry, around 37 percent said that they did not believe that AI would have a major impact on their business processes. Only around eleven percent see AI as an opportunity. Only two percent have already taken steps to use AI in their company. Digitalization, on the other hand, is also in greater demand in this industry, with digital accounting being the focus of around half of those surveyed.

The commercial insurance report highlights the importance of policy to ensure that small businesses are not disadvantaged by AI. Payam Rezvanian, member of the management board of Finanzchef24, calls for improved conditions for micro-enterprises due to the importance of AI as a key technology.

Another finding of the report is that inflation is a concern for micro and small business owners. 46 percent of those surveyed cited this as their biggest concern, with additional additional operating costs being feared in construction. Despite these concerns, 33 percent of those surveyed plan to invest more in advertising and PR in the future. There is an increased need in the area of insurance, as 36 percent of the small businesses surveyed would like to spend more money on risk protection and precautions.
