Eurogroup discusses competitiveness and digital euro
The Eurogroup will apparently meet to discuss the competitiveness of the euro area and the introduction of a digital euro. According to information from the Federal Ministry of Finance, these topics will be the focus of the discussions. A high-ranking representative of the ministry emphasized the importance of competitiveness, especially in view of upcoming political events such as the European elections and the reformation of the EU Commission. It is noted that previous measures are considered inadequate and it is emphasized that an economic transition is necessary to strengthen and diversify economic relations in the euro area.
Es wird auch erwähnt, dass es wichtig ist, im Hinblick auf die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auf eine Angebotspolitik zu setzen und Abschottung sowie neue Finanzierungsinstrumente zu vermeiden. The Federal Ministry of Finance sees no need for new debt-financed instruments at the European level. Regarding the digital euro, it is made clear that a clear agreement must be reached on what is to be achieved with the digital central bank money. The aim is to create a basic government infrastructure for payments, which will be provided by the European Central Bank.
In addition to discussions on competitiveness and the digital euro, the meeting of European Union finance ministers will discuss the European Investment Bank's commitment to security and defense and Ukraine's reform investment plan. These topics should also be on the agenda. Andrea Kißler reported from Berlin on developments in the Eurogroup and the planned discussions.
