Celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day with quirky crypto stories!

Bitcoin Pizza Day, a historic moment for the cryptocurrency industry, will be celebrated on May 22nd. This day marks the 15th anniversary of the first Bitcoin transaction, which Laszlo Hanyecz made in 2010 when he paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. Although this event received little attention at the time, it is now recognized as legendary. The value of the transaction at the time was approximately $41; today, those 10,000 BTC would be worth over $708 million. Hanyecz’s transaction is seen as an important step towards the acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a legitimate asset class. Bitcoin is now often referred to as “digital gold” and has grown from a small experimental phase into a multi-billion dollar industry.

To celebrate this remarkable anniversary, the Unterguggenberg Institute is hosting an event as part of the CryptoCircle on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The event begins at 8 p.m. in the Kultur.Leben.Wörgl zone, located at Brixentaler Straße 23 in Wörgl. The theme of the event includes quirky stories from the crypto world and the celebration of Bitcoin Pizza Day. Pizza will also be offered as part of the celebration to honor the historic connection to the first Bitcoin transaction.

Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorates not only the beginnings of Bitcoin, but also the enormous potential of cryptocurrencies and the rapid technological change the industry has undergone since then. In recent years, millions of businesses have accepted cryptocurrencies as payment. Innovations like Ethereum, introduced in 2015, now enable the issuance of smart contracts and automate complex transaction processes.

The future integration of blockchain technology into business models will be significantly advanced by solutions such as crypto-based debit and credit cards. The development of the cryptocurrency industry promises further growth and increasing acceptance in society. This is particularly evident on Bitcoin Pizza Day, which celebrates not only the journey Bitcoin has taken since 2010, but also the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
