IG Group Launches Crypto Trading for Private Investors: The New Age!
IG Group, a UK-listed trading and financial services company, launched cryptocurrency trading for retail investors on June 2, 2025. Customers now have access to 31 crypto assets including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), XRP as well as a selection of altcoins and memecoins such as Bonk (BONK). This decision marks a significant change in the company's offering, which previously only provided crypto investments through contracts for difference (CFDs).
The new option of crypto spot trading offers users the chance to start trading crypto assets directly. This new feature is implemented in collaboration with the regulated crypto asset company Uphold, which acts as a partner for processing all customer transactions as well as providing price data. The integrations are seamlessly integrated into the IG platform and the IG Invest app, making it easy to switch between crypto and other accounts, such as stock trading.
Review of previous offers and current developments
Previously, IG Group was active in the crypto derivatives space, offering crypto CFD trading to institutional clients. This allowed traders to speculate on the price movements of cryptocurrencies without owning the underlying assets. However, in 2021, retail crypto offerings were halted in the UK after the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) imposed a temporary ban on crypto derivatives. With the new trading option for retail investors, IG is referring to the now increasing acceptance of crypto in the UK.
Crypto adoption in the UK has increased remarkably in recent years, resulting in a surge in new crypto owners that is surpassing even Europe. On May 28, 2025, the FCA launched a public consultation on new rules for stablecoin issuers and crypto custodians, while in April the UK government published draft cryptocurrency regulations to protect investors from risky trading and fraud.
Importance for the crypto market
Michael Healy, managing director of IG's UK business, described the launch of crypto trading as a significant milestone for the UK crypto market. This move comes at a time when regulators are focused on creating new standards and regulations for the emerging crypto market. The partnership with Uphold, which is regulated in both the US and UK, is intended to increase user confidence in the security of the new trading offerings.
The developments at IG Group highlight the growing interest and demand for crypto offerings in an era where market conditions are changing rapidly and regulations are helping to create a safe environment for investors. Full integration into the existing platform could provide many investors with easy and efficient access to the increasingly important crypto markets.
