Amazon sued: Vzbv demands consent before advertising

The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon due to the announcement that it will place advertising on its Prime Video streaming service. vzbv boss Ramona Pop criticized Amazon for not providing customers with sufficient information about the planned change and for not giving explicit consent to it. Amazon recently announced that it would begin advertising in films and series next week, but did not provide exact details on length or frequency.

The consumer advice center sees this as a significant contractual change for which the consent of the users is legally required. Customers only found out about the change at short notice, which is viewed as a hidden price increase, as a monthly surcharge of 2.99 euros is charged for ad-free streaming. The vzbv initially warned Amazon and plans to file a lawsuit in the next few weeks. Ramona Pop emphasizes that Prime Video users should still be entitled to the ad-free option without having to incur additional costs.
