Increase in consultations: Essen Consumer Center publishes annual report for 2022

Last year, the Essen consumer advice center recorded a significant increase in advice cases compared to the previous year. Around 10,900 citizens visited the advice center to obtain information on various topics. In comparison, there were only 8,900 people seeking advice last year. The main reason for the increased demand was the increase in energy prices, which caused many citizens to ask questions about their advance payments. On average, households were faced with gas and electricity costs tripling and doubling, leading to an increased need for advice from consumers.

In addition, the consumer advice center identified an increasing need for advice regarding orders that were delayed or did not arrive at all due to delivery bottlenecks. Concerned consumers turned to the advice center, particularly when it came to furniture or electronic items that had been paid for in advance. Thanks to the support of the consumer advice center, some were able to withdraw from their purchase contracts and get the money they had already paid back. However, consumers were also faced with a large number of fake shops that offered products on fraudulent websites but did not deliver any goods. In many cases, consumers were unable to claim their money back. In order to protect consumers from dubious sites, the consumer advice center has developed an online tool that can be used to check websites for their seriousness.
