Chinese online retailer Temu warned for manipulation and greenwashing
Consumer advocates have warned the Chinese online trading platform Temu for manipulation, deception and greenwashing. The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) criticizes Temu for unclear discounts, questionable reviews and manipulative designs that unsettle and disadvantage consumers. Examples include the use of “dark patterns” and the misleading representation of deliveries to pickup points instead of home. These practices contradict EU consumer protection laws and the ban on misleading advertising under the EU Digital Services Act.
Temu's business model is described as opaque and difficult to understand, particularly due to its extremely high discounts and real-time product reviews. Consumer advocates are demanding protection from such business practices and are considering legal action following the warning. A possible lawsuit could follow. It emphasizes that companies like Temu that violate consumer rights must be held accountable.
Temu, known for extreme bargain offers, is repeatedly criticized for poor quality, non-received shipments and the poor climate and environmental impact of the products. Other countries like France have already taken measures to counter the unethical practices of platforms like Temu. It was also revealed that the company Pinduoduo, which owns Temu, recently recorded an annual profit that almost doubled.
