Commerzbank customers beware: a new phishing scam is circulating
The Federal Office for Security and Information Technology (BSI) has informed about the increasing occurrence of phishing waves that are specifically aimed at bank customers. These scams occur through various channels such as SMS, WhatsApp, email or phone calls and aim to steal sensitive data from victims. According to the Brandenburg police, the average damage per victim in a phishing case amounts to several thousand euros, with private individuals primarily affected.
The consumer advice center recently warned Commerzbank customers about a new scam characterized by an unusual email. This email claims that there has been a double charge on the Commerzbank credit card and a refund must be made. The fraudulent email contains an impersonal salutation, the stated reason for the email, an apology for possible inconvenience, a suggested solution via a refund form and a button that supposedly leads to the Commerzbank website but actually links to a fake replica.
You are strongly advised not to click or respond to the link contained in the email. The consumer advice center recommends moving the email to the spam folder if left unanswered and under no circumstances disclosing any personal information. To recognize phishing emails, Commerzbank customers should pay attention to the seriousness of the sender address and check the links using a so-called “mouse-over” to point out suspicious keywords or fake links.
It is crucial to remain alert to suspicious emails as well-organized criminals continue to attempt to gain access to data and bank accounts despite banks' improved security procedures. Careless clicks can lead to significant financial damage, which is why it is important to always pay attention to anomalies in emails.
