The level of electricity and gas prices in North Rhine-Westphalia is too high: tips for consumers.
According to the NRW consumer advice center, the level of electricity and gas prices for basic services in North Rhine-Westphalia remains too high. Despite planned price reductions on January 1st of an average of 14 percent for electricity and 19 percent for gas, the price level is significantly higher than the declining prices on the energy markets would suggest, consumer advocates reported in Düsseldorf on Tuesday. For gas, the labor prices as of January 1st ranged between 9.00 and 26.54 cents per kilowatt hour plus the basic price. For electricity, the range is between 29.81 and 55.93 cents per kilowatt hour plus the basic price.
“Such a large price range raises questions,” said the board of the NRW consumer advice center, Wolfgang Schuldzinski, according to the announcement. Energy suppliers do have different procurement strategies, which could explain certain price differences. “Nevertheless, the big differences are surprising, especially since stock market prices fell significantly in 2023.” He called on the NRW basic suppliers with above-average prices to reduce their tariffs to a normal market level.
According to Schuldzinski, consumers should check whether their local basic supplier has a cheaper special tariff for gas or electricity or whether it would be advisable to switch to an alternative provider. Alternative gas tariffs start at around 9 cents per kilowatt hour. You can currently get electricity from alternative providers for 30 to 32 cents per kilowatt hour. Families could save several hundred euros each by switching from basic care. Before switching, however, consumers should conduct internet research to see whether the new company has had a negative reputation in the past.

According to a report by www.zeit.de,
The high electricity and gas prices for basic services in North Rhine-Westphalia continue to cause problems. The North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center criticizes the fact that despite planned price reductions, the price level is still too high. The labor prices fluctuate between 9.00 and 26.54 cents per kilowatt hour for gas and between 29.81 and 55.93 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity. Wolfgang Schuldzinski, board member of the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center, calls on basic suppliers to reduce their tariffs to a standard market level. He recommends consumers review and consider alternative providers to potentially save hundreds of dollars. This could lead to greater competition in the energy market and lower prices overall.
