On April 1st, the Berlin Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) increased ticket prices. Anyone who still has an old paper ticket from before must use it by the end of September - or exchange it for a new ticket. According to the consumer advice centers in Berlin and Brandenburg, the old tickets are only valid for six months after the introduction of new tariffs.
They criticize this deadline as too short. “Other transport associations regulate the transitions for exchanges after price increases over several years,” said the associations. According to the information, more consumer-friendly solutions also apply in other industries. “For example, vouchers usually lose their validity after three years – starting from the end of the year in which the voucher was issued.”

Reducing the validity period of old paper tickets following price increases can have a significant impact on the market and consumers. On the one hand, this can lead to increased crowds at sales points and ticket machines, as many users are forced to exchange their old tickets in a timely manner. This can lead to longer wait times, passenger dissatisfaction and an increase in customer service needs.
On the other hand, the shortened period of validity could affect customer loyalty and lead to a loss of trust in the transport association's tariff system. Consumers who feel disadvantaged may look for alternative modes of transport or even use public transport less frequently.
It remains to be seen whether the Berlin Brandenburg Transport Association will respond to the criticism and make changes to the transition period for exchanging old paper tickets in order to mitigate the impact on the market and consumers.
