Consumption & Consumer Science Promotion Awards awarded: Consumer rights in smart homes and general terms and conditions under the AI microscope
Dissertation on smart home and consumer law
Dr. Jonathan Engstler was honored for his work “Consumer (purchase) contracts for networked products”. His dissertation deals with the demands of consumers in the event that online services for connected devices are no longer available. This affects products such as smart speakers, networked washing machines or robotic lawnmowers. The award shows the growing importance of smart home products and the associated consumer rights.
AI for better consumer protection in terms and conditions
Dr. Daniel Braun received the award for his work on the automatic analysis, legal evaluation and summary of general terms and conditions. His dissertation deals with the problem that consumers often agree to terms and conditions without reading them. His research into using AI methods to identify invalid clauses in terms and conditions shows how technology can strengthen consumer protection.
In the future, prizes will be divided into three categories
The Consumer Research Competence Center of the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center will award the “Consumption & Consumer Science Funding Awards” every year and will also expand the categories. This further underlines the importance of research in the field of consumer protection and consumer sciences.
