According to a report from www.infranken.de, a chemist and environmental and health protection expert from the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center has warned against a certain craft material, casting resin. This material is used in the manufacture of jewelry, decorative objects, bowls and children's toys, but has been classified as a suspected carcinogen. According to the declaration on the Internet, casting resin, also known as resin or epoxy resin, contains, among other things, bisphenol A (BPA), tributyl phosphate and volatile organic compounds (VOC). These ingredients pose risks as BPA can disrupt the human hormonal system and has possible links to obesity, type 2 diabetes, infertility, impotence, reduced birth weight and neurological changes in the child. According to a report by www.infranken.de, a chemist and environmental and health protection expert from the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center has warned against a certain craft material, casting resin.

The European Food Safety Authority has drastically reduced the daily tolerable intake of BPA, adding to concerns.

Despite this, synthetic resins made from BPA are often advertised as non-toxic and harmless to health, but this is misleading. The EU plans to ban the chemical in materials that come into contact with food to prevent particles of the substance from getting into our food. The amount of BPA that can be released from craft casting resins is currently unknown, but similar epoxy resin coatings on food cans raise concerns about BPA being released into the environment.

When using casting resin, the consumer advice center recommends reading the instructions carefully, asking for a safety data sheet, not making children's toys or objects that could come into contact with food, asking for the manufacturer's address and wearing gloves, mouth and nose protection and safety glasses when working with the material. It is important to recognize the potential dangers and take appropriate precautions to protect health.
