Google must offer cancellation buttons on Google One
The Internet company Google is facing changes after the Bavarian consumer advice center successfully sued the company. The Munich I Regional Court has decided that Google must offer a cancellation button on its Google One platform in the future. Google One is a paid service for additional cloud storage that allows users to pay monthly for expanded capacity. Although Google has now added an easily accessible cancellation button, the Bavarian Consumer Center's lawsuit sought to have Google issue a cease-and-desist declaration and undertake to permanently provide the button on the platform.
Tatjana Halm, a lawyer at the Bavarian Consumer Center, welcomed the ruling as a success for compliance with applicable law, including by large companies such as Google. The court's decision aims to simplify cancellation options for consumers by providing a user-friendly cancellation button directly on the platform. This measure follows on from existing regulations that, since July 2022, have required the integration of a cancellation button for various contracts that can be concluded online, such as mobile phone contracts, subscriptions to streaming services and magazines. Despite this regulation, a study by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations has shown that one in five providers affected by it has not yet implemented a corresponding button. The court decision against Google therefore contributes to strengthening the protection and rights of consumers in the digital space and ensuring more transparent processing of contracts.
