Google has to offer a cancellation button: Bavarian consumer advice center wins lawsuit.
The Bavarian Consumer Advice Center has brought a legal dispute against Google and won. The Munich I Regional Court ruled in favor of the Bavarian Consumer Advice Center that Google must provide a cancellation button on its Google One platform. Google One is a paid service that offers additional cloud storage space. Although Google has already added an easily accessible cancel button, the Bavarian Consumer Center demanded a cease and desist declaration to ensure that the button is permanently available on the website.
The lawyer Tatjana Halm from the Bavarian Consumer Center welcomed the court ruling and emphasized the importance of compliance with applicable law by even large companies such as Google. The introduction of a cancellation button for contracts concluded online, such as mobile phone contracts or subscriptions to streaming services and magazines, has been required by law since July 2022. This measure is intended to make cancellations as easy as online purchases, but according to a study by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations, one in five affected providers has not yet integrated a corresponding button.
